Video Sketch

Video Sketch is an 8 week workshop in the basics of video production and the language of film. Students will learn and practice the essentials of camera operation and movement, shot composition, lighting, audio recording, editing techniques and translating comedy from script to screen. Weekly video assignments will culminate in a final project, a short comedy video shot on location and produced in association with UCBComedy.com. They will learn the essentials of camera operation and movement, shot composition, lighting, audio recording, and editing techniques. The purpose of the class is to make students think about their comedy cinematically and then be able to actually produce it.

This class is designed for those who:

Don't know how to make a video. Have made a video but feel they are scraping the surface of knowing what they are doing.

Don't know the difference between a tilt and a pan, or match-on-action and eye-line match.

The purpose of this class is to make students think about their comedy cinematically and then be able to actually produce it.

Requirements of the class: A video camera and editing system. Though a digital camera and desktop non-linear editing system (Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Premiere, Avid XPress, etc) are recommended, the class could be done with a VHS camera and VCR.

Prerequisite:Completion of Improv 201 or Sketch 101.

Maximum class size is 12.

Ryan Karels

karels, ryan
Ryan Karels has worked with video for twelve years, pre-dating the proliferation of DVD technology and even the internet. He holds a film degree from Yale University, where he stopped worrying and learned to love linear editing machines and avant-garde cinema. After graduating in 2000, he produced industrials at a video sweatshop for a few years and, ever since, has been a freelance producer and editor. Ryan has been at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre since 2001, studying with Armando Diaz, Michael Delaney, Kevin Mullaney, Owen Burke, Billy Merritt and Dyna Moe. He performs with the Harold team CREEP and can also be seen in KROMPF: The Ol' Factory as well as INTELLECTUAL YOGA. Ryan is an artistic associate of Les Freres Corbusier, making theater mayhem from HELL HOUSE and HEDDATRON to the more obscure SHAKER SISTERS and THE FRANKLIN THESIS. He also teaches improvisation and acting at the Williamstown Theater Festival. His video work can be seen on the internet at The Outer Limit (www.outerlimit.org.uk), in stage shows at the UCB theater, and wherever you may find proprietary content from one of his undisclosed clients.
